Into the Woods musical marks anniversary and local production

The musical Into the Woods, composed by Stephen Sondheim with book by James Lapine, premiered on Broadway in 1987. The production weaves together characters from various fairy tales, such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Jack and the Beanstalk, to explore themes of maturity, responsibility, and the consequences of human decisions.

Since its debut, the musical has become one of Sondheim’s most popular works, earning multiple Tony Awards, including Best Original Musical Score and Best Book of a Musical. While some early critics noted the complexity of its multiple plot lines, the show is widely recognized for its deep exploration of the human experience.

In a recent local production, the SJU Theatre Company staged the musical at the Bluett Theatre. Directed by Renee Dobson, the production focused on the universal messages of the story, including how individuals navigate challenges, joy, and loss throughout their life journeys.
