Introversion Software releases free Defcon remaster for 20th anniversary
Introversion Software has released a free remastered version of its iconic indie strategy game, Defcon, to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Originally released on September 29, 2006, the game is a real-time strategy title centered on global nuclear warfare and deterrence.
The 20th Anniversary Edition focuses on technical modernization rather than gameplay changes. Key updates include support for high-resolution displays, ultrawide monitors, multi-monitor setups, and HDR. The world map has been redesigned with more detailed coastlines, and the audio system has been rewritten to improve quality and resolve stuttering issues, particularly on macOS.
Technically, the update incorporates DirectX 11 for PC, ANGLE and OpenGL ES 3.0 for macOS, and OpenGL Core for Linux. The software has also been updated to C++23 and SDL3. The remaster was developed with contributions from the community, including Keiron McPhee, Jasmin Brumme, and various beta testers.
