Intuit Credit Karma report shows rising average American debt
A July 2026 study by Intuit Credit Karma involving over 107.3 million members reveals that average overall debt rose to $60,112 between April and June 2026, representing a 2.38% increase since late 2025.
Student loan debt experienced the most significant growth, rising 6.3% in the first half of 2026. Generation Z reported the fastest-growing debt across multiple categories, including student loans (10.47%), auto loans (2.98%), and mortgage debt (2.64%). While Gen Z's credit card debt remained nearly flat, the generation saw a slight increase in average open collections.
Debt among subprime borrowers also saw a substantial rise, increasing 9.76% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the fourth quarter of 2025.
