Intuitive's da Vinci 5 receives CE mark for cardiac surgery in Europe

Intuitive has announced that its da Vinci 5 surgical system has received the CE mark for use in adult cardiac surgery within the European market. This regulatory approval allows the fifth-generation technology to be utilized for complex procedures, specifically thoracoscopically assisted cardiotomy and minimally invasive coronary bypass operations.

The system aims to facilitate a transition from traditional open-chest surgery, which often requires a sternotomy (cutting through the breastbone), to minimally invasive approaches performed through small incisions. This development is particularly relevant in Europe, where cardiovascular diseases accounted for one in three deaths in the European Union in 2022. Intuitive intends to support the rollout with a comprehensive ecosystem, including specialized instruments, infrastructure, and global training programs for surgical teams.
