Inulin Fiber Supplement Linked to Worsened Fatty Liver in Mouse Study

A recent study by researchers at Edith Cowan University tested the effects of two popular dietary substances on mice with non‑alcoholic steatohepatitis, a severe form of fatty liver disease. The natural compound ellagic acid, found in fruits such as pomegranates and strawberries, protected the liver and reduced disease markers. By contrast, the prebiotic fiber supplement inulin increased weight gain, raised blood‑sugar levels and aggravated liver damage, likely through changes to the gut microbiome.

Health experts note that the findings underscore the need for caution when using supplements in the context of fatty liver disease. They also stress broader lifestyle factors that influence liver health, including limiting excessive alcohol intake, reducing added sugars, and maintaining a balanced diet rich in whole‑food sources of fiber.

While the mouse‑model results are preliminary, they suggest that certain supplements may be harmful for individuals with fatty liver disease and that further human studies are required before clinical recommendations can change.
