Inuvialuit reindeer husbandry to receive $885,225 federal boost

The Canadian federal government has pledged $885,225 to the Inuvialuit Community Economic Development Organization (ICEDO) to support reindeer husbandry in the Mackenzie Delta. The funding, provided through the Canadian Agricultural Strategic Priorities Program, aims to transform the management of the Mackenzie Delta herd from a community food security initiative into a self-sustaining agribusiness.

The investment is intended to create a strategic roadmap for infrastructure, workforce development, and market expansion in a remote region. Since ownership was transferred to the ICEDO in 2021, the reindeer herd has grown from approximately 1,500 to 7,000 animals. The initiative seeks to advance food sovereignty and economic resilience within the Inuvialuit Settlement Region.
