Invasive Asian bee discovered in Šumava by Czech scientists

Biologists from the University of South Bohemia have discovered an invasive species of solitary bee, Megachile sculpturalis, in the Šumava region of the Czech Republic. This finding is significant as the species, which originates from East Asia, was previously only recorded in South Moravia within the country.

The discovery occurred near a pasture by Blanický mlýn at an altitude of approximately 700 meters. Researchers noted that this altitude is atypical for the species and suggested that extreme summer heat may have contributed to its presence in this area.

Megachile sculpturalis can grow up to 2.5 centimeters in length. It nests in natural cavities, which can be identified by a distinctive golden-looking seal made of resin and sap. The species has been spreading across Europe since its introduction via maritime shipping at the turn of the century, moving from southern France into central European countries including Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia.
