Butterfly bush invasive species threatens biodiversity

The invasive butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii), originally from China, is posing a significant threat to biodiversity in Europe. The Naturschutzbund Deutschland (Nabu) has warned that the plant is spreading uncontrollably, as a single shrub can produce up to three million seeds.

Because the plant is robust and requires little soil maintenance, it rapidly displaces native shrubs such as hawthorn, wild roses, and various wildflowers. This displacement is particularly problematic in sunny areas like riverbanks and roadsides, which serve as vital habitats for specialized local flora and insects. While popular in gardens for attracting butterflies, the plant's aggressive growth patterns are driving out indigenous species. In Switzerland, the sale of Buddleja has already been restricted due to its status as an invasive species.
