Mnemiopsis leidyi invasion spreads in Baltic Sea, threatening native fish stocks

The ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi, first recorded in Europe in the 1980s after being transported on ships from Atlantic ports of North and South America to Black Sea harbours, has become a dominant invasive organism in the Baltic Sea. At the peak of its 1988 invasion the species reached densities of up to 400 individuals per cubic metre, after which its numbers fell as it exhausted its main food source, zooplankton. Recent research shows the spread is accelerating, with expanding oxygen‑depleted zones—known as "oxygen deserts"—identified as a facilitating factor.

Mnemiopsis leidyi preys on the eggs and larvae of commercially important fish such as sprat and sardine, posing a serious threat to Baltic fisheries. The species also consumes large quantities of zooplankton, competes with other marine organisms for food, and can survive periods of scarcity by cannibalising its own larvae. It is capable of bioluminescence, adding to its unusual biological profile. The combined ecological and economic impacts have raised concern among marine scientists and fishery managers across the region.
