Invasive hornet species expand across Europe

Invasive hornet species are expanding across Europe, causing ecological and public concern. In Spain, the oriental hornet (Vespa orientalis) has become established in Andalusia, having first entered through the Port of Algeciras in 2018. Experts from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) note that while the insect is increasingly found in urban areas, it is generally not life-threatening unless the victim has an allergy. However, researchers have highlighted a lack of effective urban control protocols and have called for action from regional and local authorities.

Simultaneously, the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) is spreading through Germany, particularly in states like Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia. This species poses a significant threat to local ecosystems by preying on honeybees, wasps, and other insects. It also impacts agriculture by damaging fruit crops. Authorities advise citizens not to attempt to remove nests themselves due to the danger posed by their stings.
