Invasive insect species increase in Germany due to climate change

Invasive insect species, including various types of bugs and the Asian hornet, are increasingly appearing in Germany, a trend attributed in part to climate change making more regions habitable.

During autumn, various bug species such as the Green Stink Bug and the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug seek warm, dry shelter for the winter. These insects often enter homes, apartments, and sheds, congregating near heat sources like lamps or radiators. Experts from NABU note that Germany is home to approximately 900 bug species.

The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) has also been spreading across Europe and was first detected in Germany in 2014. It is particularly prevalent in states such as Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Saarland. Classified as an invasive species by the EU in 2018, the Asian hornet poses a threat to local ecosystems by preying on honeybees, wild bees, and other insects. It also causes agricultural damage by feeding on fruits like grapes. Authorities advise against attempting to remove hornet nests personally due to safety risks.
