Invasive Ivy Removal and Heat‑Stressed Hydrangeas Challenge Gardeners
Gardeners face two growing problems in Slovenia. Ivy (Hedera helix) is an aggressive, climbing plant whose strong vines and aerial roots can damage walls, fences and wooden structures. Experts advise cutting the vines at the base and carefully excavating all roots, as incomplete removal allows rapid regrowth.
At the same time, popular garden hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) are suffering from increasingly hot and dry summers. The Royal Horticultural Society reports a sharp rise in heat‑related damage, prompting discussions about relocating collections to cooler regions. Specialists recommend planting hydrangeas in shade, preferably on north‑facing sites, and using more drought‑tolerant species such as Hydrangea paniculata, while ensuring ample watering during heat waves.
