Invasive red-necked longhorn beetle confirmed in Fukui Prefecture

In Fukui Prefecture, authorities have confirmed the presence of the red-necked longhorn beetle, an invasive species, in Ooi Town. This marks the first time the pest has been identified in the Hokuriku region. The beetle is known to devastate cherry and plum trees, and recent investigations have found evidence of larvae in nine cherry trees and 13 plum trees within the town.

Local officials are concerned about the potential spread to the Reinan region, where plum cultivation is significant. The beetle is highly prolific, capable of laying up to 1,000 eggs. Authorities are urging residents to inspect the bases of cherry and plum trees for holes or frass (a mixture of wood dust and excrement) and to report any suspicious findings to local government offices.
