University of California researchers study ocean iron fertilization to combat climate change
Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, have published a study in the journal ‘Nature’ investigating ocean iron fertilization as a method to combat climate change. The research explores how adding iron to the upper layers of the ocean could stimulate the growth of phytoplankton.
Phytoplankton are single-celled organisms that perform photosynthesis, a process that converts carbon dioxide into oxygen and plays a vital role in regulating the global climate. While these organisms often have sufficient nutrients to thrive, iron is frequently a limiting factor for large-scale blooms.
While previous experiments have shown that iron fertilization can accelerate plankton blooms and increase photosynthesis, scientific evidence regarding the long-term duration of carbon sequestration remains unproven. Additionally, researchers are still investigating whether such interventions could have negative impacts on natural marine ecosystems.
