Inverness explores history and Highland charm

Inverness, known as the capital of the Highlands, offers a blend of historical significance and natural beauty. A central landmark is Inverness Castle, a stronghold situated on a cliff above the River Ness. While famously associated with Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the castle has a long history of sieges and rebuilds dating back to the 11th century, having been recognized for its strategic value by figures such as Robert the Bruce and Mary, Queen of Scots.

Formerly used as a prison and courthouse until 2020, the castle now hosts the Inverness Castle Experience, featuring high-tech visuals and installations focused on Highland history and culture. The city also serves as a gateway to the North Coast 500 touring route and is located near Loch Ness. Other local attractions include the Ness Islands nature reserves and boat trips on the Moray Firth, where bottlenose dolphins are resident.
