Inversion Space wins NASA contract to study aerocapture technology

Inversion Space Company has been awarded a $350,000 contract by NASA to study the use of its Arc reentry vehicle for an Earth-based demonstration of aerocapture. The study, supported by the NASA Ames Research Center, is scheduled to conclude by June 30, 2027.

Aerocapture is a technique where a spacecraft uses the aerodynamic forces of a planetary atmosphere to dissipate energy and enter orbit, rather than relying solely on propulsive maneuvers. This method can significantly reduce the amount of propellant required for orbital insertion, allowing missions to carry more payload or travel faster to distant destinations.

Inversion CEO Justin Fiaschetti noted that the maneuverable Arc vehicle could simulate the aerocapture trajectories of other planetary bodies while testing in Earth’s atmosphere. Successful implementation could benefit future missions to Mars, Venus, Titan, Uranus, and Neptune by enabling more efficient and cost-effective deep-space travel.
