Nathaly Mafla death investigation continues in Quito

Ecuadorian authorities are investigating the death of 20‑year‑old university student Nathaly Juliette Mafla Castillo. She disappeared on 4 June from the Universidad Politécnica Nacional and her body was found on 9 June in a deep ravine (about 20 m) in the La Vicentina sector of Quito.

Preliminary forensic observations noted bruises, abrasions and a leg wound with exposed bone, but investigators said only a full autopsy and toxicological, biological and genetic tests can determine whether the injuries occurred before, during or after a possible fall. The Fiscalía General del Estado, the Policía Nacional and specialized units have preserved personal items, including a tablet and identification documents, as evidence.

The student’s mobile phone, seized days after her disappearance, yielded no useful information. The family criticised the delay and handling of the device, noting that the phone was returned to the father without their knowledge. Security camera footage showed Mafla leaving the campus alone and later walking disoriented in La Vicentina. The investigation remains open, with DNA testing and additional forensic analyses pending.
