Investigation launched into deaths of cats at Ufac campus
Authorities in Rio Branco are investigating the deaths of several cats found on the campus of the Federal University of Acre (Ufac). Professors and volunteers suspect poisoning, noting that the animals appeared healthy the day before and showed no visible injuries.
Recent deaths were recorded near a feeding site used by caregivers. While volunteers suspect foul play, official forensic confirmation of the cause of death is still pending. The Civil Police have been notified to investigate whether criminal activity occurred.
In addition to the deaths, the university campus faces ongoing issues with animal abandonment. It is estimated that approximately 80 cats live within the institution, frequently moving between areas such as the entrance gate, the Veterinary Hospital, and the Center for Biological and Natural Sciences.
