Investigation reveals open porthole caused Kestelli sea accident

A technical investigation has revealed the cause of the maritime accident involving Işınsu Kestelli, President of the Izmir Commodity Exchange, and her husband, Can Kestelli, near Poros Island, Greece.

Experts from the Greek Coast Guard, insurance adjusters, and specialists from the boat manufacturer, Catana/Bali, examined the 58-foot catamaran at a shipyard near Athens. The report confirmed that the vessel had no structural defects, cracks, or hull deformations. Underwater components were also found to be intact.

The investigation concluded that the significant water ingress was caused by an open porthole in the crew cabin. Due to the wavy sea conditions at the time of the incident, the open porthole allowed large amounts of water to enter the vessel, leading to the emergency.
