Investigative series maintain high streaming viewership

Investigative series continue to maintain high viewership on streaming platforms, according to Nielsen data from the first half of 2026 in the United States. Popular titles include ‘The Rookie’, which recorded approximately 12.8 billion minutes watched, and ‘Law & Order: SVU’, which reached about 12 billion minutes.

Many of these successful shows utilize the procedural format, where each episode presents a new case while character development occurs over multiple seasons. Ado Oliveira, CVO of Watch TV, notes that this structure provides an efficient balance between novelty and familiarity, allowing viewers to engage with known characters while solving new mysteries.

The genre's longevity is attributed to the clear objectives presented in each episode—such as finding a missing person or identifying a suspect—which encourages viewers to formulate their own theories alongside the characters.
