Pietracatella ricin poisoning investigation expands to school digital forensics

Investigators in the Pietracatella ricin poisoning case are conducting extensive digital forensics across several schools in the Campobasso and Riccia regions. The probe follows the deaths of Antonella Di Ielsi and her 15-year-old daughter, Sara Di Vita, who were poisoned in December 2025.

Authorities are examining approximately 155 computers and central servers at institutions including the Istituto Agrario in Riccia, the Liceo Scientifico Galileo Galilei, and the Liceo Classico Mario Pagano. The goal is to identify web or darkweb searches related to the synthesis, preparation, and toxicological effects of ricin.

A significant development in the investigation suggests that the intended target of the poisoning may not have been the victims, but rather Gianni Di Vita, the former mayor of Pietracatella and husband of Antonella Di Ielsi. Investigators are exploring a motive involving personal vendettas and clandestine relationships. Additionally, police have located ricin plants near the area between Riccia and Lake Occhitto, suggesting the toxin may have been produced locally using seeds from these plants.
