Investment diversification strategies and risks

Effective investment diversification requires more than simply increasing the number of mutual fund schemes or Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs). Investors often face risks of duplication when multiple funds, such as large-cap or flexi-cap schemes, hold overlapping stocks or have similar underlying exposures.

While diversification aims to mitigate risks associated with individual companies or sectors, it cannot eliminate systemic risks, inflation, or market-wide declines. During periods of economic stress, assets that typically move independently may become highly correlated, causing prices to fall simultaneously.

To achieve genuine diversification, investors should examine underlying holdings, review asset allocation across different classes, and ensure that investments have distinct sources of risk rather than just different names.
