Investopedia report: Lifetime cost of American Dream exceeds $5 million
A new report from Investopedia indicates that achieving the traditional American Dream now carries an estimated lifetime cost of $5.32 million. This represents a 4.1 percent increase from the previous year, a rate that is outpacing wage growth.
The study calculates the cost based on eight specific milestones: homeownership, retirement savings, raising two children and funding their college education, purchasing new cars, healthcare, hosting a wedding, owning pets, and taking annual family vacations. Individual milestones such as homeownership, retirement, and car ownership each exceed $1 million in lifetime costs, while raising two children is estimated to cost nearly $1 million.
Costs vary significantly by location. While the national range spans from approximately $4.5 million in Mississippi to $7.9 million in Washington, D.C., New York is among the eight most expensive states. In New York, the lifetime cost exceeds $6 million, driven primarily by the expenses associated with housing, childcare, and higher education.
