Invima proposes restructuring of Review Commission and Specialized Rooms
The National Institute for Food and Drug Surveillance (Invima) has launched a public consultation to redefine the functions and composition of its Review Commission and Specialized Rooms. The proposal aims to strengthen the scientific and technical rigor of the agency's regulatory processes while increasing the efficiency of administrative procedures.
Under the proposed reorganization, Review Commissions would focus on matters requiring highly specialized scientific knowledge, while other processes could be handled directly by the Institute's internal departments. For medicines, the plan seeks to clarify the division of responsibilities between the Specialized Room and the Directorate of Medicines and Biological Products. Regarding food and beverages, the proposal suggests an integrated approach involving technical profiles from the Institute and support from the National Register of Experts.
Invima Director General Sindy Pahola Pulgarín stated that the initiative seeks to “strengthen technical capacities and expand expert participation,” ensuring that procedures advance promptly without compromising the scientific rigor necessary for health protection. The consultation is open to citizens, academia, industry groups, and regulated sectors, with comments accepted until October 14, 2026.
