INWIT deploys AI and IoT sensors on towers for environmental protection

INWIT is implementing a project titled ‘MonitoriAmo la Natura’ in the Castelporziano State Nature Reserve to utilize telecommunications towers as environmental protection tools. Developed in collaboration with Legambiente, the initiative integrates artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT) technology into existing digital infrastructure.

The system uses intelligent cameras equipped with AI to detect smoke plumes in real time, providing early warnings for potential fires to relevant authorities. Additionally, IoT sensors monitor air quality by tracking up to 14 parameters, including fine particles, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide, alongside meteorological data such as temperature and humidity.

This approach expands the role of INWIT’s infrastructure from mobile connectivity to multi-service digital platforms capable of supporting smart city initiatives and territorial management through its network of approximately 26,000 towers and 20,000 IoT gateways across Italy.
