IO Interactive trims gadget excess in 007: First Light, focusing on espionage

IO Interactive originally planned its 007: First Light game as an ensemble piece that would have featured a team of young double‑O agents training together in Malta and London. Writer Michael Vogt explained that the concept shifted after a training‑mission explosion, leaving Bond as the sole survivor and changing the tone from light‑hearted camaraderie to a harsher reality.

The studio also considered giving Bond a "Mr. Gadget" makeover with over‑the‑top weapons, but senior combat designer Tom Marcham said the team pulled back, opting for tighter close‑quarters combat and realistic espionage tools. Future experiments with gadgets remain on the table, while Amazon MGM confirmed its ownership of the franchise for upcoming projects.
