Ioan Bianu commemorated on 170th anniversary of birth

Events are being organized in Alba and Bucharest to commemorate the 170th anniversary of the birth of Ioan Bianu, the founder and former director of the Romanian Academy Library.

In Bucharest, the Romanian Academy will host a session dedicated to Bianu, featuring speakers including the President of the Romanian Academy, Marius Andruh. The program includes an exhibition titled ‘Ioan Bianu – 170 years since birth’ and the launch of the book ‘Beyond the Shelves. The Story of Ioan Bianu’ at the library.

In Alba County, commemorations will continue on September 5–6, 2026, with religious ceremonies officiated by the Archbishop of Alba Iulia and the Archbishop of Cluj. Bianu, originally from Alba County, is recognized for his lifelong dedication to the institution he helped establish.
