Ioan Bianu honored on 170th anniversary of birth

The Romanian Academy will host a commemorative session on September 2, 2026, to honor the 170th anniversary of the birth of scholar Ioan Bianu. Known as ‘The Librarian,’ Bianu dedicated 51 years of his life to the institution he helped establish.

The event at the Romanian Academy Hall will feature speakers including Marius Andruh, President of the Romanian Academy, and Nicolae Noica, Director General of the Library of the Romanian Academy. The program includes the opening of the exhibition ‘Ioan Bianu – 170 years since his birth’ and the launch of the book ‘Beyond the Shelves. The Story of Ioan Bianu’ at the Theodor Palladya Hall.

Commemorations will extend to Alba County on September 5–6, 2026, featuring religious ceremonies and a local gathering titled ‘Return to Roots’ in the village of Făget, Bianu’s birthplace.
