Ioannina announces new urban projects amid Central Square delays
The Municipality of Ioannina is planning several urban development projects aimed at upgrading public spaces and improving resident daily life. According to Deputy Mayor Thomas Giotitsas, upcoming interventions include the creation of a new organized public space and square in the Kardamitsia neighborhood, the redevelopment of Chatzi Square, and the utilization of parking areas in Litharitsia.
The redevelopment of Chatzi Square is expected to include bioclimatic interventions, upgraded greenery with climate-resilient plants, modernized irrigation, improved playgrounds, and stormwater management systems.
Meanwhile, the renovation of Ioannina’s Central Square faces significant delays. While the project is currently 65% complete in terms of physical work and has reached 45% financial absorption, the timeline has been extended. The Municipal Committee approved an extension to September 2, 2026, but the contractor has requested a further extension until April 26, 2027, which requires approval from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. Deputy Mayor of Works Kostas Gkogos noted that many obstacles have hindered progress, though a section of the square near the fountain is expected to reopen in late August.
