Ioannina authorities commit to Lapsista water safety
The Municipality of Ioannina and the Water Supply and Sewerage Company of Ioannina (DEYAI) have made formal commitments to address irrigation issues in the Lapsista area. During a discussion at the Ioannina Municipal Council regarding the condition of the Lapsista ditch, DEYAI President Giorgos Papadiotis outlined two primary objectives to ensure safety for local producers.
First, the authorities pledged that by the next irrigation period, all treated water used for irrigation will meet all required specifications, with suitability certified by competent authorities. Second, they committed to preventing uncontrolled sewage overflows from manholes. Any technical overflows required under extreme conditions will be strictly monitored and recorded to track the timing, cause, and extent of the occurrence.
Papadiotis acknowledged measurements showing high microbial loads in certain parts of the ditch and expressed support for the concerns of local producers. However, he rejected the idea that DEYAI is solely responsible for all recorded pollution, stating that the organization aims to work alongside producers to identify the true source of the problems while protecting public health and the environment.
