Ioannina citizens protest Velissario Camp land use plans

Citizens and local collectives in Ioannina are organizing an open meeting to discuss the future of the Velissario Camp. The group aims to form a united front to demand that the land be transferred entirely to the Municipality of Ioannina to be converted into an Urban Park of Culture and Recreation.

Activists argue that the site is essential for improving the city's air quality and providing green space for residents. They have raised concerns regarding current government plans, which reportedly allocate 45% of the area for military housing, 25% for roads and public spaces, and only 30% to the Municipality, which may be used for administrative buildings. The organizers criticize the local municipal authorities and the regional government for failing to take a sufficiently active stance in securing the full transfer of the land without construction burdens.
