Ioannina hit by severe storms and flash flooding

Severe storms, heavy rainfall, and hail struck Ioannina and the wider Epirus region on Monday afternoon, August 17, 2026. The intense weather caused rapid flooding in several areas, turning streets into makeshift rivers.

In the Voyiannou – Gennimata area, significant water accumulation created difficult driving conditions. Local reports indicate that this specific location has become increasingly vulnerable to flooding during heavy downpours, with similar incidents occurring repeatedly over recent months.

In the eastern part of Ioannina, the storm brought intense rain and hail, quickly submerging roads. The weather instability also affected other parts of the Ioannina basin and the mountainous regions of Epirus, highlighting the region's susceptibility to sudden and extreme meteorological shifts.
