Ioannina hospital facilitates kidney and cornea donation
A family in Ioannina, Greece, has donated the organs and tissues of a loved one following a diagnosis of brain death. The donation included kidneys and corneas, providing new life prospects for patients on transplant waiting lists.
The procedure was successfully carried out at the University General Hospital of Ioannina. The operation involved specialized medical teams from both the University General Hospital of Ioannina and the Papageorgiou Hospital in Thessaloniki, coordinated by the Hellenic Organ Donation Organization (EOM).
The administration of the University General Hospital of Ioannina expressed its condolences to the family and extended gratitude for their decision to transform a personal loss into an act of solidarity. The hospital also commended the intensive care, surgical, and anesthesia departments for their rapid coordination, which is critical for the successful utilization of grafts.
