Ioannina-Kakavia highway construction progresses in Greece

Construction is underway on the Ioannina-Kakavia highway, a strategic 69.5-kilometer project designed to serve as the northwestern extension of the Ionian Motorway toward the Albanian border. The project aims to enhance cross-border connectivity, boost regional development, and improve access to key infrastructure such as the Ioannina Airport, the local industrial zone, and the Port of Igoumenitsa.

The highway is divided into two main sections: the 46.4-kilometer Ioannina-Kalpaki stretch, which involves building a new road, and the 23.1-kilometer Kalpaki-Kakavia section, which focuses on upgrading the existing road. The project includes 11 interchanges and a significant 560-meter bridge with 14 spans to facilitate connections with the Egnatia Odos and the Ionian Motorway.

With a total budget of approximately 386 million euros, work is currently active in areas including Kosmira and Asvestochori. The scheduled completion date for the entire axis is June 2029.
