Ioannina opens cooling centers and shifts garbage collection amid extreme heat

The municipality of Ioannina announced that, because of forecasted extreme temperatures, air‑conditioned public shelters will be open on 20–21 July 2026. Facilities include the 2nd and 125th KAPI branches, the Napoleone Zerva site, the Vellisariou 4 location and the town hall square. Residents, especially vulnerable groups, are urged to use these spaces, stay hydrated, avoid sun exposure between 11:00‑17:00 and seek medical help if heat‑related symptoms appear.

In parallel, the city’s waste‑management service cancelled the midday garbage‑collection shift for the same two days. Only the evening shift will operate, and citizens and businesses are asked to place waste in containers only at night to protect workers from heat and prevent sanitary issues.
