Ioannina prepares to implement controlled parking system

The municipal administration of Ioannina is preparing to implement a controlled parking system following the update of a formal study. This represents the city's first organized attempt at a stable parking management system, as previous efforts were considered experimental and lacked permanence.

While specific details regarding the final model—such as exact zones, fee amounts, payment methods, and operating hours—have not yet been publicly released, the updated study is based on an earlier plan. That plan proposed three controlled parking zones in the center of Ioannina and a separate zone in the Castle area.

Under the proposed framework, permanent residents would receive free parking via a special card, while visitors would benefit from a short free period of 30 to 60 minutes before progressive charges apply. Additionally, the plan suggests free parking on Sundays and official holidays. Notably, the municipal parking area at the old Slaughterhouses, which has historically been free, is expected to be integrated into the new system.
