Ioannina County pushes for digital tourism campaign in southern Albania and Tirana

The Tourism Working Group of Ioannina County sent a letter to the Epirus Region’s tourism department, the municipality of Ioannina and the local Chamber of Commerce urging a targeted digital promotion of the city and county in southern Albania and Tirana. The group highlights that Albanian visitors – both diaspora and citizens – represent the second‑largest tourism source for the Epirus region after domestic tourism, with over 200,000 arrivals each year that generate more than €40 million in revenue. Average spending is €173 per day and €115 per overnight stay, while annual cross‑border traffic through the Kakavia checkpoint totals 2‑3 million visitors and 700,000‑1 million vehicles.

The proposal calls for modern digital tools such as social‑media campaigns, bilingual Greek‑Albanian content, partnerships with Albanian media outlets and use of digital tourism platforms. It also notes that the completion of the EU‑funded Ioannina‑Kakavia transport axis will speed travel to the neighbour, potentially increasing tourist flows from Albania and other Balkan and European markets. The Working Group offered its expertise and contacts to support the campaign.
