Iodine deficiency impacts thyroid health and development

In observance of Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day on October 21, health experts have highlighted the significant risks associated with inadequate iodine intake. Iodine is a critical mineral required for the production of thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism, body temperature, energy balance, and the functioning of the brain and nervous system.

Deficiencies can lead to serious health issues, most notably goiter and hypothyroidism. In adults, symptoms may include fatigue, feeling cold, weight changes, and lethargy. The impact is particularly severe for vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children. In these populations, iodine deficiency can impair physical growth and cause irreversible damage to brain and nervous system development, potentially leading to cognitive impairments and reduced learning abilities.

To maintain adequate levels, experts recommend consuming iodized salt alongside a balanced diet including fish, seafood, dairy products, and eggs. However, medical professionals warn against the unconscious use of iodine supplements, which can also negatively affect thyroid health.
