Iodine importance during pregnancy

During pregnancy, a woman's nutritional requirements change significantly, particularly regarding iodine intake. Iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormones, which regulate numerous bodily processes. For pregnant women, these hormones are critical for the healthy development of the fetus, specifically the brain and nervous system.

The World Health Organization emphasizes that iodine needs increase during pregnancy to support both the mother's thyroid gland and the developing baby. Reliable sources of iodine include seafood, sea fish, and iodized salt. However, it is noted that specialty salts, such as Himalayan or certain sea salts, may not contain sufficient iodine, making it important to check product labels.
