IOM resumes voluntary migrant return flights from Khartoum

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has conducted the first voluntary return flight for migrants from Khartoum International Airport since the outbreak of war in Sudan in April 2023. This operation marks a significant step in restoring humanitarian activities within the capital city.

The charter flight was part of the Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration programme, funded by the European Union. It aimed to assist stranded migrants, including nationals from Niger, Nigeria, and Ethiopia, who have faced economic hardship, loss of livelihoods, and difficulties obtaining travel documents due to the ongoing conflict.

To facilitate the process, the Nigerien embassy in Cairo provided emergency travel documents, while Sudanese authorities managed departure procedures. The program provides comprehensive support, including registration, counseling, transportation, and reintegration assistance to help returnees rebuild their lives in their home countries.
