IOM seeks $100 million to protect 4.9 million people from El Niño

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has issued an appeal to raise $100 million to protect 4.9 million people from the potentially severe impacts of the El Niño phenomenon. The funding is intended to allow the IOM and its partners to act before humanitarian needs escalate due to anticipated droughts, floods, and heatwaves.

Forecasts from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) indicate that El Niño is expected to intensify in the coming months, reaching a “very strong” intensity and likely lasting until February 2007. The IOM noted that while communities facing repeated climate shocks often recognize warning signs, they frequently lack the necessary support to act in time.

The organization plans to use the funds to support governments in emergency planning through training and preparedness exercises. Additionally, the IOM aims to pre-position relief items and essential supplies near high-risk areas to ensure rapid access to emergency shelter, water, sanitation, hygiene, and health services.
