IOMA and IPS alert retirees to WhatsApp scams in Buenos Aires

Authorities in Buenos Aires province have issued an alert regarding a new WhatsApp scam targeting retirees, pensioners, and affiliates. The Institute of Social Security (IPS) and IOMA reported that criminals are impersonating these organizations to request fraudulent payments under the guise of processing a ‘fe de vida’ (proof of life) procedure.

Both agencies emphasized that all official procedures are free of charge and do not require any form of payment or transfer. They have advised citizens not to respond to suspicious messages, click on unknown links, or provide personal, banking, or security information via WhatsApp, social media, or email.

This warning follows broader concerns regarding the vulnerability of older adults to digital fraud. Recent data indicates a high frequency of scams involving fake utility discounts, bank loans, and impersonation of officials. In response, local organizations like PAMI have held prevention workshops to provide seniors with tools to recognize and avoid these digital deceptive practices.
