Ion I. Brătianu, last Brătianu dynasty descendant, dies in Romania

Ion I. Brătianu, the final direct descendant of the historic Brătianu political dynasty, has died. Born in Bucharest in 1939, he spent decades in exile in France and Canada before returning to Romania after the 1989 Revolution. He founded the Union Liberal Brătianu, served as a deputy in the first democratically elected Parliament, and created the Cultural Foundation Ion I. Brătianu to promote Romanian history and heritage. His death marks the end of a lineage that played a central role in Romania’s independence, unification and modern state‑building.
