Ionian Islands Governor denies renaming region to Odyssey Islands

Giannis Trepeklis, the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, has issued a clarification regarding recent reports about the region's name. He stated that there is no plan to rename the Ionian Islands to ‘The Odyssey Islands,’ calling such reports inaccurate.

The initiative titled ‘The Odyssey Islands’ is intended as a modern promotional strategy for tourism and culture, inspired by Homeric epic. Trepeklis emphasized that this project aims to highlight the islands' unique position within a global cultural narrative without replacing or altering their existing names or individual identities.

The connection between the Ionian Islands and the Odyssey has deep scientific and cultural roots. The initiative seeks to link the region's cultural heritage with tourism, landscapes, and local experiences, drawing on historical academic studies and cultural routes established in previous decades.
