Ionity to deploy battery storage to expand European charging network

Ionity plans to accelerate the development of its fast-charging network across Europe by installing battery storage systems at approximately 50 stations starting in 2027. This strategy aims to bypass the lengthy delays, sometimes lasting up to three years, required to reinforce existing electrical grid connections.

By using large-scale batteries, such as a 1,028 kWh system recently installed in Wertheim, Germany, stations can accumulate electricity during periods of low demand and discharge it during peak usage. This allows operators to increase the number of available charging points without waiting for grid upgrades. For example, the Wertheim site successfully increased its capacity from four to six charging points using technology supplied by Sungrow.

This infrastructure expansion comes amid rising demand for electric vehicle charging. During the Toussaint holiday period in France, major operators reported significant increases in charging sessions: Ionity saw a 32% rise, Fastned 22%, and Allego 16%. This surge is attributed to increased electric vehicle sales and seasonal travel patterns.
