IonQ shares jump as investors pile in amid quantum computing optimism

IonQ reported a 754.7% year‑over‑year revenue increase to $64.67 million in the first quarter, though earnings per share of ‑$0.34 missed expectations. The company’s market capitalisation stands at about $24.5 billion and the stock traded around $65.56.

Institutional investors have added to their stakes: Swedbank AB bought 60,355 shares worth roughly $2.7 million; RBC increased its holding by 12.5%; Amundi entered with a $630,000 position; AQR Capital lifted its stake by 106%; UBS Asset Management added 450,031 shares valued at $9.9 million; and Focus Partners Wealth grew its position by 30%. Overall, institutions now own about 41.4% of IonQ’s shares.

The surge aligns with broader sector enthusiasm after the U.S. Department of Commerce announced $2.013 billion in CHIPS Act grants for nine quantum‑computing firms, signalling government backing. Analyst commentary notes that while D‑Wave Quantum also posted strong gains, IonQ’s rapid revenue growth and expanding partnerships keep it at the forefront of the quantum‑stock rally.
