High school baseball in Japan sees tournament updates and reform calls

Developments in Japanese high school baseball include upcoming tournament coverage and discussions regarding the sport's structure. The 2026 Aomori National Sports Festival will feature free live streaming of both hardball and softball baseball competitions via the ‘Virtual High School Baseball’ platform. Participating hardball schools include Hanamaki Higashi, Ken Dai Takasaki, Yokohama, Mie, Tenri, Chibenten Wakayama, Ariake, and Aomori Yamada.

Separately, former NPB pitcher Shunsuke Watanabe has raised concerns regarding the current tournament system. He suggests that the intense focus on the Koshien tournament may inadvertently limit the growth of players who do not reach the top level. Watanabe advocates for more league-style formats to ensure players gain more consistent experience, noting that the current single-elimination structure can prematurely end the development of talented athletes.
