Ios island seeks to diversify tourism through culture and nature
The island of Ios is working to diversify its tourism profile beyond its international reputation for beaches and nightlife. By focusing on history, culture, nature, and gastronomy, local authorities and organizations aim to expand the tourism product and extend the tourist season.
Giorgos Dimitropoulos, founder of the association ‘Ios Adventure’, stated that this shift toward alternative tourism is a gradual realization of the island's multifaceted identity. The strategy of the Municipality of Ios aligns with this goal, seeking to add a deeper level of experience without discarding the existing tourism model.
A key component of this initiative is the development of a hiking network. In collaboration with the Municipality of Ios and the Green Fund, efforts are being made to signpost, maintain, and promote trails that connect Chora with Skarko and the interior, including areas such as Mylopotas, Klima, Agia Theodotis, Psathi, and Prophet Elias. These paths are intended to serve as a gateway for visitors to engage with the island's natural and cultural landscape.
