iOS Screen Time API limitations for Instagram content control

Technical analysis of the iOS Screen Time API reveals that developers cannot selectively block specific content types within applications, such as Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts. The API operates on entire applications, categories, or web domains rather than internal app features.

Because the API uses opaque tokens to protect user privacy, developers cannot identify the specific names of the apps a user has selected for restriction. Furthermore, blocking an application via Screen Time also prevents all associated notifications from appearing. This creates a functional trade-off where users attempting to limit social media consumption, such as avoiding Reels, also lose the ability to receive direct messages (DMs).

To manage notifications more granularly, users must rely on internal Instagram settings to disable specific alert types for posts, stories, and live videos while keeping message notifications active. Alternatively, accessing social media through a web browser may offer different levels of control compared to the native application.
