Iowa Army Ammunition Plant hosts local emergency response leaders
The Iowa Army Ammunition Plant (IAAAP) recently hosted local fire, law enforcement, and emergency management leaders for a site visit near Middletown, Iowa. The engagement aimed to strengthen community partnerships, enhance communication, and synchronize emergency response capabilities between the facility and local agencies.
Participants, including Joshua F. Walsh, President of American Ordnance, toured the government-owned, contractor-operated facility. The plant produces medium- and large-caliber munitions for the U.S. military. Discussions covered the installation’s mission, modernization projects, and ongoing safety efforts for the workforce and surrounding regions.
Officials also discussed a $6.7 million grant awarded to the city of Burlington through the Department of War’s Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation. This funding, provided via the Defense Community Infrastructure Program, is designated for the construction of a permanent fire station to serve both the IAAAP and the local community. The facility and local agencies maintain a mutual aid relationship; IAAAP Fire Chief Robbie Tapp noted that plant emergency crews responded to more than 45 calls outside the facility in the past year.
